In the 1920’s Lockhart Elementary
consisted of a one room school house providing education from grades one
through eight. Since that time, many renovations have taken place to
accommodate the community. In 1936, the main structure was built to serve
a predominantly rural community. A single brick building housed the
auditorium, office and grades one through eight. A small corner structure
contained shop classes. In the 1950’s several wings were added,
which included the office, clinic and new classrooms. The media center was
added in 1965. Eventually, the main brick building was renovated to
accommodate the office and, in 1990, the cafeteria was expanded. In 1992,
an addition with 13 classrooms was completed. In 2001-2002 several projects were
completed to improve traffic flow, enhance the learning environment and
provide more effective utilization of existing facilities. Two buildings,
which house art, music and several classrooms were constructed. This
project resulted in all of our students being housed in permanent
buildings and a portable-free campus. Today, Lockhart Elementary serves 538
students in kindergarten through fifth grade representing a suburban and
culturally diverse area. Resource teachers provide support services for
speech, ESOL, and varying exceptionality students. The racial distribution
is 49% Caucasian, 31% African-American, 15.5% Hispanic and 4.5% other.
Our school is committed to higher student achievement and to
improving access to high quality instruction for all students. Specialized instructional support, in the
areas of reading, math and writing, is provided for students and staff.
Lockhart Elementary has a curriculum resource teacher and a literacy/math
resource teacher. School-wide staff development focuses on improvement in
reading, math and writing. This support enhances classroom instruction and
enables students to meet the expectations of the Sunshine State Standards. |
